Upcountry Success (UPS) was born out of a grassroots inquiry into the challenges facing rural youth in Abothuguchi West Ward, Meru County, Kenya. Between 2013 and 2014, UPS’s founder conducted a local survey that revealed a recurring barrier to youth progress: inadequate access to start-up capital and limited mentorship. While proposing a community mentorship forum to the local administration, delays in action prompted a community-led response. In January 2016, UPS formally emerged by organizing small groups of youth to seek guidance, mentorship, and support from senior members of society, laying the foundation for a practical, locally driven development model.
Through a series of pilot projects launched between 2016 and 2017, UPS tested and validated a core hypothesis: rural youth can successfully start income-generating ventures without personal financial capital, with support and mentorship from senior members of society and resource mobilization. Projects in tree nurseries, farming, and community forums demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach, while complementary initiatives such as book clubs, environmental conservation, and youth forums expanded UPS’s social impact. With its model proven at the ward level, UPS has since focused on strengthening its foundation and preparing to replicate its community-led approach across other rural regions in Kenya and beyond.
